Since our offices are moving to the Empire Plaza soon, I was looking into rates for the YMCA branch there (I’m better about working out if a gym is convenient and this is within walking distance of my office).  This is what I learned: the cost of the Empire Plaza branch is cheaper, at $35* for an individual rate. It should be noted that this rate only allows you access to the Empire Plaza...

Roomie: “…have to go to Planned Parenthood” Me: “Watch out for the protestors” Roomie: “Actually, they help me figure out where they are! I usually have a hard time finding their offices until I see them in front” Me: “Huh. Never thought they’d actually be useful! There’s one way to look at it.”

Co1: Can you call Co2 and ask if they got that email I sent regarding Tuesday’s meeting? Me: Sure! (calls) Co1 wants me to ask if you received the email he sent regarding Tuesday’s meeting Co2: Yep! I sent a reply. Did he get it? Me (to Co1): They got it and sent a reply. Did you get it? Co1: Yeah, I got it Me (to Co2): He got it. Thanks! (hangs up) Me (to Co1): You know...

The alarms on this phone are funny. The very first wake up call is very gentle and audibly oozes into being: “Hi, honey. It’s morning time, the sun has risen, the birds are chirping. Rise and shine!” If I choose to snooze, however, the music changes tune and each subsequent alarm becomes the audio equivalent of Gwen from that Margaret Cho skit: “HI, MY NAME US GWEN AND...

I was thinking about something this evening. Sojourner Truth’s poem, “Ain’t I a woman?” was taught to me in school as if it were written in the vernacular of the slaves, which was an edited version. Truth’s first language was Dutch and she was, from what I gather from reading about her life, quite witty, intelligent, and very well-spoken. Why, then, would somebody...

Numbers (Minimum wage rebuttal)
I’m having such a conniption over this reporter’s comment about minimum wage. Quoth she: I made minimum wage for 5-plus years and can’t remember ever thinking “MW should be higher.”  I’m not gonna lodge a personal attack, just going to break this down in numbers because numbers are impartial and I am a ball of aneurysm-bursting rage right now. But I’m keeping it all...

Olive Juice
When I was a child I could only eat olives when they were mixed in with my grandma’s potato salad. They were just something I tolerated. And goat cheese…the very idea made me get a little sick up in my mouth. But I loved cake.  Now? I love olives and goat cheese. Especially mixed with hummus in a pita pocket. And it’s good for me?? I discovered this is what happens to men and...

Cure for Cancer?
Is this true? This article links to another posting on the University of Alberta website about the employment of dichloroacetate to cure cancer cheaply and effectively. If it’s true, holy crap! But this was posted 4 years ago….Why is this now just making the rounds?

It’s always the same argument… “You could come home” “I *have* a home here” “You have an *apartment* there” “Yes, and I have friends who are like family, a job, two cats*, and I happen to like it here” “With all the snow and ice?” “YES” And as easy as it would be for me to go home, save rent, pay off bills,...

I wrote a piano riff using my Master Piano app on my phone.  I can’t afford a piano at the moment. I’ve always wanted to learn.  I used to have a Casio about a million years (okay, 25 years) ago and I played it all the time, tinking out popular songs from books that I’d been given.  I still remember which keys correspond to which notes. I just never had any formal training. We couldn’t afford it...

Today was the proverbial camel back-breaking straw in the issue of pet owners who do not pick up after their pets. I want to preface this by saying I am not a dog-hater. I love the furfaces.  I don’t have time to devote to one with all my jobs or I’d have one myself.  I’ve been known to dog-sit on occasion, which makes up for the fact that I can’t have one right now. If you see me out in the...

I found out this morning my grandmother passed away. I’d been avoiding phone calls from my family only to find out after the fact that they were calling because of this.  My mother had left a cryptic message, “Call your mother, or else” and because of the threatening nature of the message of course I wasn’t going to call her back.  Then she leaves a subsequent message with my coworker who was...

Morning Coffee
I’ve been a patron of Flavour Café for years, more frequently since I moved to the area. It’s conveniently located near my bus stop so I shamble in, like the pre-caffeinated zombie that I am, to get the brain juice that starts my day. My personal drug of choice is the Jamaican Me Crazy roast.  Charlie, the owner, likes to alphabetize his specialty roasts.  This makes my OCD heart swell with...

Carmen's Cafe-Flan French Toast review
So, I stopped by Carmen’s Cafe today because I saw on the menu that they were having “Flan French Toast” …the heck? That sounded AMAZING! And I happen to know several times over that Chef Chris has mad skills in the kitchen so strapped for cash as I am it was worth it to stop by and try this.  Let me TELL you…I nearly teared up from so much enjoyment. The caramel...

Space Oddity as a children's book →
I’m curious, folks.  How many of you would read this to your children as a realistic lesson in how things sometimes go wrong, while explaining it’s a work of fiction based on a song? Why?   Or would you save it for yourself, opting not to freak your kids out at such a young age over a harsh (albeit hypothetical) situation such as this? Discuss…. The reason I ask, not being a...
